What is the movie James Dean about?
Quite simply really, it’s a biographical film about the cultural icon James Dean.
What is the one thing that motivates me with James Dean?
There is a scene where James Dean (portrayed by James Franco) is auditioning for a theater role.
He tries his best to begin with but his glasses are cracked and he has trouble reading the lines given to him through the broken lenses. The casting director gives him $10 and some time to repair his glasses for a second and proper audition attempt.
However, Dean uses the money to eat and learns his lines and practices them with the hot dog vendor. He returns for the second audition and impresses the right people while the casting director asks what he did with the money since his glasses are still broken. He replies telling the truth and impresses everybody even more.
Just goes to show follow your heart and usually what you think you should do, despite of what is considered the norm, is the best way to go about things.
Who is my favorite character? Why?
Obviously the film centers around James Dean so he does steal the show. James Franco does an excellent job. I love how James Dean did what he knew he was born for and didn’t listen to the naysayers.
What this movie’s famous line?
The line or lines that struck me the most was in a scene in the very beginning where James Dean, who at this stage is an unknown, is introduced by Elia Kazaan to Raymond Massey, a high profile actor.
Elia Kazaan played by Enrico Colantoni
“Jimmy, Jimmy, come meet Raymond Massey.”
Raymond Massey played by Edward Herrmann
“Oh, he’s probably shy.”
James Dean played by James Franco
“All right. This man can’t play my father. He’s too old. Get somebody else.”
“I’ll talk to him. I’ll talk to him.”
“What, what the hell were you thinking in there? Raymond Massey is a highly respected actor and you’ve offended him.”
“He said I offended him?”
“Of course you deeply offended him.”
“Because I need him to hate me.”
What elemental message do I see?
That James Dean enjoyed his journey to stardom, he wanted to be an actor and went for it when the whole universe was against him. We all have problems and issues, the secret is to use that pain. Turn our weaknesses into strengths and don’t play the game already set by precedence. Play the game in life, whatever you’re trying to achieve, using your pain as inspiration to change the rules.
I also want to add a quote by the man himself that absolutely blows me away!
Life is short, break the rules – they were made to be broken
Forgive quickly, kiss slowly
Love truly, laugh uncontrollably
And never regret anything that makes you smile.
The clouds are lined with silver and the glass is half full – though the answers won’t be found at the bottom
Don’t sweat the small stuff,
You are who you are meant to be,
Dance as if no one’s watching,
Love as if it’s all you know,
Dream as if you’ll live forever,
Live as if you’ll die today”
What do the critics think?
Who cares, I love it!
