The Godfather Parts I & II

The Godfather Title

What is The Godfather about?

The movie follows the lives of an organized crime family called the Corleones.  It demonstrates the inner workings of the mafioso and the violence the involved parties use to achieve their goals.  Even though these men have no respect for human life, and how *business* is done is atrocious, you definitely come out of the other end of this film siding with them.  The film centers around the head of the family Vito Corleone and his sons and their quest for survival and dominance in New York City’s criminal underworld.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola.  Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan, Talia Shire and Diane Keaton

What is the one thing that motivates me with The Godfather?

I love the discipline and business acumen of Vito”The Godfather” Corleone portrayed by Marlon Brando.  He would definitely have to be my favorite character.  His presence dominates the screen.

“It’s an old habit.  I spent my whole life trying not to be careless.  Women and children can afford to be careless, but not men.”

What this movie’s famous line?

Vito Corleone played by Marlon Brando

“I understand.  You found paradise in America.  You had a good trade, you made a good living.  The police protected you and there were courts of law.  So you didn’t need a friend like me.  Now you come and say “Don Corleone, give me justice”.  But you don’t ask with respect.  You don’t offer friendship.  You don’t even think to call me “Godfather”.  You come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married and you ask me to do murder, for money.”

What elemental message do I see?

A man can go from nothing to everything.

What is The Godfather Part II about?

This film has two story lines.  The first follows the Corleones after the events in the first film where Michael (Al Pacino) is now head of the family.  The second shows the beginnings of Vito “The Godfather” Corleone as a young man in New York City.  It shows how he turned to a life of crime eventually becoming the man he was in the first film.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola.  Starring Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Robert Duvall, Lee Strasberg, Bruno Kirby, Talia Shire and Diane Keaton.

What is the one thing that motivates me with The Godfather Part II?

My favorite character who is again, Vito “The Godfather” Corleone inspires me.  Only this time, he is a young man starting out and is played by Robert DeNiro.  It’s interesting to see his beginnings.  Starting out as a humble man, working and doing the right thing by his friends and family.  It is only by a chance meeting with his neighbor that they resort to illegal activities.  I like to think he did it as way to rid his neighborhood of the local mafia who were preying on the people.  He sees that he can do it better than anybody so he embarks on a life of crime.  He became the local mafia and helps the people of his neighborhood.  A theme that was also witnessed in the first movie when he is an old man.

That a man doesn’t have to fill his father’s shoes but can walk beside him.
